The eleventh session of the IMO Ship Design and Construction Sub-Committee (SDC 11) met in London 13 – 17 January 2025, where many technical and operational requirements related to ship design and construction were discussed.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has provided a brief to inform of the matters discussed and overview of the more significant issues progressed at this session, including advancements in survey methods, safety regulations, material use, noise reduction, and emergency towing guidelines. The cargo vessel MV. Suryani Ladjoni suffered a leakage and began listing in the northern waters of Madura Island, Indonesia, on January 18.

According to Indonesian Authorities, the incident prompted a swift rescue operation that ensured the safety of all 18 crew members on board. The vessel began taking on water at approximately 06:00 LT. The incident began when KM. Palung Mas received information from KM. Tanto Luas via VHF Ch. 16 that KM. Suryani Ladjoni was taking on water.

Port of Barcelona authorities have reported that one person died and people were injured due to a tank explosion.

The explosion occurred due to a fire in a tank containing acetate at the Moll d’Energia dock in Barcelona Port, according to local news.

Fire incidents involving charcoal products in containers continue to occur. As a cargo, charcoal presents unique stowage and handling requirements and requires strict safety protocols. In addition to the fire hazard, misdeclaration is known to result in the carrier being unaware of the risk.
