North Korea earlier this week conducted the first test-firing of the weapons system of the new “Choe Hyon-class” warship it recently unveiled, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday.
Cruise and anti-air missiles were launched and artillery fired as part of the test-firing attended by leader Kim Jong Un and senior officials, the report said.
The time has come for North Korea’s navy to choose to accelerate nuclear armament for maritime sovereignty and for the sake of national defence, Kim was quoted as saying.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has published its Monthly Piracy Report for the month of February 2025.
Sixteen acts of piracy and armed robbery were committed against ships during the month of February 2025, reported by IMO Member States or international organizations in consultative status.

Over the past week, 22-28 April, two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia (one CAT 2 incident and one CAT 4) were reported.
Both incidents occurred onboard bulk carriers while underway off Pulau Cula, Indonesia, in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) of Singapore Strait (SS). The crew members were not injured in the incidents.

The fourth Enclosed Space Entry – Joint Industry Workshop took place at OCIMF’s London office in late March, where a working group drawn from maritime organisations gathered to identify measures to reduce or eliminate deaths in enclosed spaces onboard vessels.
In the previous three meetings, the cross-industry working group’s review of prior enclosed space incidents identified operational, commercial, technical and training related issues as recurring contributing factors. This review also included an analysis of incidents to understand the relationship between vessel type, incident location onboard and the rank or role of the victims.
